Chapter Ten

Rachel

Hunter was becoming something to Rachel, something more than a friend. She could feel it in the air around them.

She had always had feelings for Hunter. He was her best friend, but around thirteen years old, she began to feel new things for him. She got butterflies when he was around, and he had been her first ‘date’ to a school dance.

Hunter was her soulmate. Whether he was the romantic kind or not, she didn’t know, but their hearts were the same.

Even when she was madly in love with Phoenix, she knew he would never understand her the way his younger brother did.

She never knew if Hunter felt the same way about her, and she never wanted to jeopardize their friendship to find out.

But now, everything was different.

She had nearly kissed him the night before, and her mind was still reeling. It had been so long since she’d felt any romance with someone that it left her buzzing.

Rachel wondered if things would be awkward the next morning but figured Hunter would cover any discomfort with something silly.

She imagined walking into the kitchen and having Hunter look at her with vague recollection. He would squint his eyes at her, then snap his fingers and say, “Didn’t I almost kiss you in a hot tub once?”

But the next morning when she walked downstairs, Hunter wasn’t even home.

The workday was long, but Rachel loved staying active. People who had never tried yoga before would often scoff at its ability to stretch your body. After all, it wasn’t a high-intensity interval workout. It was just a bunch of stretches, they’d say. How could it possibly make you sweat?

But holding those poses trained your body and strengthened your muscles in surprisingly painful ways.

That day, she did an eight-hour session and then stuck around for another hour at the ranch to watch the couples leave on horse and buggies, cuddled up under a blanket as they glided along the snow.

When she came home, Hunter still wasn’t back.

As she lay in bed that night, Rachel traced a single stretchmark down her stomach. It was the only one she’d gotten from her pregnancy. She never got very big and couldn’t imagine what her skin would have looked like had she carried for the full nine months.

She hated the stretchmark. Not for the sake of vanity, but because it was the only visible reminder that she had almost been a mother.

Maybe she would love it one day, but not today.

A notice on her phone illuminated the bedroom. She reached over to the nightstand and pulled the device up to her eyes.

Phoenix was calling.

She watched the phone shine into the dark bedroom, not brave enough to answer but not cruel enough to hit ignore.

He called every night at the same time, and she never answered. If this had been months ago, that’s what she would have wanted him to do. Persist.

But his persistence didn’t matter anymore. Not now that they had lost their child, and certainly not now with whatever was happening between her and Hunter.
